Schooner Fish & Chips: Serving the Community That They Live In And Love

Februay 2022 Featured Restaurant of the Month

How It All Began

Schooner first opened in 1970, but has been owned by the Wilbur family since 1980. Over the years, they opened other locations and a few chip trucks, but they now focus on the one main location in Oshawa, Ontario, serving the community that they live in and love.

The Schooner Gluten-Free Story

A good friend of Schooner Fish & Chips owners, Tiffany and Randy Wilber was diagnosed with having Celiac Disease after years of struggling with foods containing gluten ingredients. The Wilbur’s spent a weekend away with their friend and saw what she had to deal with everyday. The restaurants they went to had no knowledge of the questions that their friend was asking. Tiffany felt terrible for her friend and thought, why couldn’t she have poutine or fish n chips that were gluten-free?

“Why couldn’t she have poutine or fish & chips that were gluten-free?”

Tiffany Wilbur

When the Wilbur’s got home that weekend, Tiffany bought gluten-free ingredients, fired up the back fryer and made gluten-free fish, poutine and coleslaw. Her friend enjoyed it so much that they decided to continue serving gluten-free options and haven’t stopped since! Schooner’s has even expanded their menu to include gluten-free gravy, corndogs and mini donuts. YUM!

Combined with top quality ingredients and over 42 years of experience, Schooner Fish & Chips has revised their recipe to taste like their famous fish & chips!

Schooner’s is a gluten-free approved restaurant by the Gluten-Free Food Program and is endorsed by the National Celiac Association as well as Coeliaque Quebec and is a celiac safe establishment.
